- 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter
- 6 large Eggs
- 1.5 cups Whole milk
- 0.5 teaspoon Salt
- 0.25 teaspoon Cracked black pepper
- 1 loaf Country white or wheat bread
- 6 slices Cooked bacon
- 4 ounces Shredded white cheddar cheese
- 2 tablespoons Thinly sliced green onions or chives
- Salted butter (for topping)
Instructions
- Grease the Dish: Lightly grease the bottom and sides of an 8-inch baking dish with 1 tablespoon of softened butter.
- Prepare the Custard: In a shallow baking dish, combine the beaten eggs, whole milk, salt, and cracked black pepper. Whisk until well mixed.
- Flatten the Bread: Use a rolling pin to gently roll out each piece of bread until completely flattened.
- Mix the Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine the crumbled bacon, shredded cheese, and green onions. Toss until evenly mixed.
- Fill the Bread: Scatter about 2 heaping teaspoons of the bacon mixture onto each flattened bread piece and roll tightly.
- Slice for Presentation: Place the rolled piece seam side down and slice it in half widthwise.
- Dip and Arrange: Dip both halves into the egg mixture and place upright in the greased baking dish.
- Repeat: Continue steps 4 through 7 until all the bread and filling have been used.
- Chill the Dish: Pour any remaining egg mixture over the rolls, cover with foil, and refrigerate for 1 hour.
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350˚F.
- Bake Covered: Bake in the preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes.
- Butter it Up: Remove from the oven, uncover, and dot the top with the remaining tablespoon of butter.
- Final Bake: Return to the oven and bake for an additional 10 minutes until the top is golden.
- Cool Slightly: Allow to cool slightly before serving.
