Description
This Crockpot French Onion Beefloaf combines the rich flavors of French onion soup with a hearty ground beef base, slow-cooked to perfection and topped with caramelized onions and melted Swiss cheese for a comforting and easy family dinner.
Ingredients
- 900 grams ground beef
- 120 grams breadcrumbs
- 50 grams grated Parmesan cheese
- 60 milliliters whole milk
- 2 large eggs
- 15 milliliters Worcestershire sauce
- 5 grams fine sea salt
- 2 grams freshly ground black pepper
- 2 large yellow onions, sliced
- 28 grams unsalted butter
- 240 milliliters beef broth
- 8 slices Swiss cheese
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, milk, eggs, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
- Shape the mixture into a compact oval loaf and place it in the center of your crockpot.
- In a skillet over medium heat, melt butter. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for 20 minutes until deeply golden and softened.
- Stir the beef broth into the caramelized onions and simmer for 2 minutes.
- Spoon the onion and broth mixture evenly over the beefloaf in the crockpot.
- Cover and cook on low for 6 to 8 hours, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (71°C) and juices run clear.
- About 10 minutes before serving, layer the Swiss cheese slices over the top of the beefloaf. Cover and allow the cheese to melt completely.
- Slice and serve warm.
Notes
- For best results, use a 6-quart or larger slow cooker.
- The internal temperature should reach 71°C (160°F) when fully cooked.
- Gruyère cheese can be substituted for Swiss cheese for a richer flavor.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated and taste even better the next day.
- If using ground turkey, add 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil to maintain moisture.
- Gluten-free breadcrumbs can be used for a gluten-free version.
- Omit cheese or use a plant-based alternative for a dairy-free option.
