Description
Creamy Chicken Cordon Bleu is a delightful take on a classic dish that combines tender chicken, savory ham, and melted Swiss cheese, all enveloped in a rich, velvety sauce. This easy-to-prepare recipe offers comforting flavors perfect for a weeknight dinner or a special occasion.
Ingredients
- 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- 4 slices of ham
- 4 slices of Swiss cheese
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1 cup heavy cream
- ½ cup chicken broth
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Place each chicken breast between two sheets of plastic wrap or parchment paper. Gently pound the chicken until it’s an even thickness, about ½ inch thick.
- Season both sides of the chicken breasts with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
- Place one slice of ham and one slice of Swiss cheese on top of each chicken breast.
- Carefully roll each chicken breast tightly around the ham and cheese. Use toothpicks to secure the ends if necessary.
- In a shallow dish, add the all-purpose flour. Dredge each chicken roll in the flour, shaking off the excess.
- In another dish, beat the eggs and set aside.
- Dip each floured chicken roll into the egg mixture, then roll in breadcrumbs until fully coated.
- In a large oven-safe skillet, heat 4 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. When hot, add the chicken and brown each side for about 3-4 minutes.
- Remove the chicken from the skillet and set aside. In the same skillet, add the heavy cream and chicken broth. Whisk to combine, bringing to a gentle simmer.
- Place the chicken rolls back into the skillet with the sauce, spooning some sauce over the top.
- Transfer the skillet to the preheated oven and bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (75°C).
- Carefully remove the toothpicks and let the chicken rest for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley.
Notes
- For best results, use fresh ingredients.
- A splash of lemon juice can be added to the sauce for brightness.
- Use a meat thermometer to ensure the chicken is cooked to 165°F (75°C).
- Feel free to experiment with different herbs and spices.
- Consider adding cooked spinach or bacon to the filling for variation.
- Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- The dish can be frozen before or after cooking for up to 3 months.
