Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (or bread flour for extra chewiness)
  • 1 teaspoon instant yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil, plus extra for brushing
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning (optional)
  • 1 cup pizza sauce (homemade or store-bought)
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup pepperoni, finely diced (or substitute with vegetables for vegetarian option)
  • 1/2 cup cooked Italian sausage, crumbled (optional)
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped bell peppers
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onions
  • 2 tablespoons fresh basil, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 2 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning or dried herbs
  • Cooking spray or additional olive oil

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, yeast, sugar, and salt.
  2. Add warm water and olive oil to the dry ingredients and mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let rest for 15-20 minutes.
  5. In a medium bowl, mix together the shredded mozzarella, parmesan, pepperoni, sausage (if using), bell peppers, onions, fresh basil, oregano, and red pepper flakes.
  6. Set aside your pizza sauce in a separate bowl.
  7. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  8. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough into a large rectangle approximately 16 x 12 inches and about 1/4 inch thick.
  9. Spread a thin layer of pizza sauce evenly over the dough, leaving about 1/2 inch border around the edges.
  10. Sprinkle the cheese and topping mixture evenly over the sauce.
  11. Starting from the long edge, tightly roll the dough into a log, pinching the seam to seal.
  12. Slice the log into 1-inch pieces.
  13. Place the rolls cut-side up on the prepared baking sheet, brushing each roll with beaten egg wash and sprinkling with additional parmesan and Italian seasoning.
  14. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes, or until golden brown and bubbly.
  15. Remove from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes before serving.
